Our History

For more than 80 years, Mahar Funeral Home & Cremation Services has been a trusted part of Bennington and the surrounding communities. Families turn to us because they know we are leaders in our profession—dedicated to excellence in service and committed to treating every family with compassion, integrity, and respect.

Founded in 1935 by Edward and Olga Mahar, the funeral home quickly became a cornerstone of care in southern Vermont. Their dedication to helping families through life’s most difficult moments established the values that have guided our work for generations.

In 1959, their son Alex Mahar joined the family firm, later becoming president when the business was incorporated in the late 1960s. Continuing that tradition of service, Alex’s son John Mahar entered the business in 1985 and became owner in 2008—marking the third generation of Mahar family leadership.

Today, Mahar Funeral Home & Cremation Services remains committed to the vision Edward and Olga set forth more than eight decades ago. For generations, families throughout Bennington and southern Vermont have placed their trust in us, and we are honored to carry forward this proud legacy of compassionate service.
