William W. Toftness,74, a resident of Observatory St. in Bennington died Wednesday March 30, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born in Alberta, Canada March 16, 1948. He was the son of the late Henry B. Toftness and Sara Jane (Martin) Toftness.
After graduating from high school Bill joined the United States Marine Corp. Following his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from Norwalk Community College in 1972 with an associates degree in business administration and later received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southern Vermont College.
He married the former Pamela J. Brown on May 21, 1983 at the family home in Bennington. They were married by Justice of Peace Mary Dermody and the marriage was blessed by Father Quinn of Sacred Heart Church.
In earlier years Bill was employed at Shippan Candies in Stamford, CT. After moving to Bennington, he worked at Triangle, Jard, Bennington Brush, United McGill, Nastech, Eveready and CLS Transport. He later worked for Carmen's Car Service and then owned and operated his own transportation company, Bills Transport.
Bill loved to work. He enjoyed working in the garden but his main interest was his family and grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela J. Toftness of Bennington. Three daughters, Sara Webster (Robert) of Bennington, Cynthia Hutchins (Aaron) of Fair Haven and Kattie Johnson (Jonathan) of Georgia, VT. Ten grandchildren, Alyson, Damien and Aylin Webster, Rose, Cullen and Aisling Hutchins and Maverick, Cameron, Dezarae and Samantha Johnson. A brother, Bartlett Toftness (Cynthia) of Wallingford, CT and a step brother, Don Connelly of Bennington, VT and his lifelong friend, Romeo Gagne of Seymour, CT. Along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday April 3, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
A prayer service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday April 4, at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral at Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m.
The burial will take place in the family lot at Saint John's Cemetery in North Bennington.
