RAY STRATTON OBITUARY
POWNAL, VERMONT
Ray Smith Stratton, age 67, a resident of Pownal, Vermont died on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at Albany Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Ray was born in Bennington on August 23, 1951, and was raised here by his mother and stepfather Ellen and Edward Welch and his beloved grandmother Esther Stratton. He received his education in Bennington, graduating from Bennington High School.
Ray was a well known Masonry Contractor who employed many area residents over his decades in business and retired under the name S&S Masonry passing the torch and his wealth of knowledge on to his daughter and son. Having begun his work as a teen under his uncle's tutelage, Ray expanded his knowledge and business resulting in successfully constructing several area landmarks including K-Mart Plaza and Aldis.
Ray enjoyed time with his family and encouraged as many wilderness excursions as time and work would allow. He was an avid outdoors-man who loved sharing his passions for cat fishing on Lake Champlain, dips in the Atlantic, as well as casting a line in any pond, river or stream Vermont had to offer.
Ray is survived by the love of his life, Lucilyn Stratton, nee Medina of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines. They were married Aug. 18, 2005 halfway around the world in a traditional island ceremony.
Along with his wife Lucilyn, he is survived by four children: Bonnie L. Stratton of Shaftsbury, VT, Rachel Briggs of Bennington, Bridget Stratton of Jacksonville, NC and Gregory Stratton of White Creek, NY. , as well as his step-daughter Gilena Gay M. Aban who currently resides in Cavite City, Philippines. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and his Uncle and best friend, Robert "Hawk" Stratton, along with an entire extended family who would remember him best as "Little Jigger". Ray's life also included five step-children and their extended family including David Murphy and Scott Dessler, with whom Ray remained especially close.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Bonnie's home, at 2:00PM. To RSVP please contact Bonnie, Rachel, Greg or Bob.
