If you knew Mike Brady, you most likely heard his laugh before you saw him.
Michael Edmund Brady, 78, of Bennington, Vermont, passed away unexpectedly on August 5, 2025. Born on December 13, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Joseph Brady and Eileen Sullivan Brady (both predeceased). He grew up in Saugerties, NY, where he met and married the love of his life, Catherine Ellen Maines Brady. Together, they shared 56 joyful years of marriage.
Michael is survived by his children Brendan and Meaghan (married to Christopher Patti); his beloved grandchildren John “Jack” and William, who brought endless joy to his life; and his brother Robert Brady and sister-in-law Maureen, along with their children, Maeve and Eilidh. His life was made happy by a close band of cousins he considered siblings, a loved collection of brother and sister in-laws and a lively bunch of nephews and nieces.
A proud graduate of Saugerties High School, Michael went on to earn his B.S. from Villanova University and his D.D.S. from Columbia University’s School of Dental and Oral Surgery. Following dental school, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Dental Corps stationed in Winter Park, Florida.
In 1974, Michael and his family moved to Bennington, Vermont, where they built a community of deep and lasting friendships. He established a private dental practice, where he cared for patients for 26 years with kindness, skill, and compassion. In 1999, he began providing dental services at the Molly Stark Elementary School, where he was instrumental in creating a school-based dental care program that, at its peak, brightened the smiles of 900 students across the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union. Later, he became the Medical Director of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Dental Facility, a role he held with pride and dedication until his passing.
Michael's life was guided by a deep sense of community and civic duty. He was an active member of the Parish of St. Francis De Sales, the Bennington Lions Club, and the town's Planning Commission. His professional contributions included serving as President of the Vermont State Dental Society, a member of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examinations, the Vermont Board of Dental Examiners, the Board of Trustees for Delta Dental, and the Board of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, which conferred upon him the status of Trustee Emeritus.
Michael was a sportsman, a scholar, and above all, a gentle man. He loved skiing, tennis, and above all was an avid, one might call obsessed, golfer who won his fair share of tournaments entered, his crowning achievement winning the Senior Club Championship at Taconic Golf Course. He was fortunate to travel the world with friends and family, his favorite places being those with fairways and greens.
He will be remembered for his booming laugh, generous spirit, and the deep care he showed to his family, patients, and community.
