Martha Christine Harwood (Bodak)

March 13, 1929 — June 28, 2022

Martha Christine (Bodak) Harwood of Shaftsbury passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on June 28, 2022.

She was born in Hoosick Falls, NY on March 13, 1929, to Andrew and Frances Bodak. She was a 1946 graduate of Saint Mary's Academy.

Martha worked various jobs in the local area until she married Victor K. Harwood, from Shaftsbury, at Fort Benning, GA. Her sons Victor K. Jr. and Alan were born there. After a brief assignment to Japan, her and Victor moved to Fort Bragg, NC, where their son Mark was born. Soon, they moved to Fort Campbell, KY, where their daughter Donna was born. When Victor was assigned to Vietnam as an advisor, she remained in Shaftsbury, VT, and gave birth to her son Gary.

Martha was very proud of her five children who were all military veterans.

After Victor came back from Vietnam, they returned to Fort Benning, GA, and then later to Germany. Victor retired from the US Army in 1966 and finally returned to Shaftsbury. Their property was their pride and joy and remained so for the rest of their lives.

Martha was totally devoted to her family and household, although she found time to work as a waitress at Howard Johnson's, and later at other local establishments. She was interested in gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and was a superlative cook She loved water skiing, nature, and the outdoors. Martha was a devoted Catholic, and communicant at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington.

She was predeceased by her parents, three brothers and a sister. William "Whitey" Politowski of Hoosick Falls, NY, Edna (Politowski) Konopka of Franklin, WI, Konrad Bodak of Belmar, NJ, and Donald Bodak of Queensbury, NY.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday July 6, 2022 at 1pm at the Shaftsbury Village Cemetery.

Immediately following the Graveside service, there will be a reception at Martha's Beloved home.

Contributions in memory of Martha may be made to Saint John the Baptist Church in North Bennington thru the office of the Mahar Funeral Home 628 Main Street, Bennington, Vermont 05201
