Mr. Louis “Joe” F. Hurley, 98, longtime resident of Bennington, VT passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026.
Joe was born on September 28, 1927 to the late Frederick and Eva (Sawyer) Hurley in Bennington, VT. He was one of six children. He attended Bennington High for his early education, and afterwards joined the United States Army Airforce, serving during World War II from 1945-1947.
Joe married the former Grace Bellerose on November 3, 1945 at the Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Together they would raise two children. Joe and Grace were married until her passing on May 6, 2003.
After serving in World War II, Joe was an employee at Bijur Lubricating Company as a production worker for 39 years, and would retire in 1987.
Joe was a member of many organizations and clubs in the Bennington area. He was a proud and lifelong member of the VFW Post 1332, the American Legion Post 13, the Taconic Grange #491 in Shaftsbury, VT, and was also a member of the Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church.
Louis “Joe” Hurley is survived by his daughter, Cindy Harrington of Bennington, VT. His son, Joseph Hurley (Nancy) of Bennington, VT. Three grandchildren: Carrie Haskell, Aimee Harrington, and Betsy Hurley. A sister-in-law, Avis Hurley. Several great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Eva Hurley. His wife, Grace Hurley. Brothers: David Hurley, Raymond Hurley, and Frederick Hurley. Sisters: Alma Shattuck, and Mary Davis.
Friends and relatives are invited for a time of visitation on January 20, 2026 from 10:00-12:00 PM at EP Mahar & Son Funeral Home located at 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201. Following visitation, a memorial service with military honors will be held at the Vermont Veterans' Home Chapel at 325 North Street, Bennington, VT 05201. The burial will follow at the family plot at White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington.
