Lewis G. "Sonny" Monroe Jr., 84, a resident of Route 67 in Walloomsac, NY died Monday June 27, 2022 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY following a brief illness.
He was born in Bennington, VT on July 25, 1937. He was the son of the late Lewis G. Monroe and Gertrude (Carpenter) Monroe.
He married the former Kathleen "Kay" Doyle on May 11, 1968 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Mrs. Monroe died January 9, 2019.
First and foremost, Sonny was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was admired in the community for his kindness and generosity.
Sonny had a love of automobiles and was around them all of his life. He had an amazing mechanical aptitude and could fix almost anything. Sonny and his wife, Kay, operated Sonny's Motors in Walloomsac from 1962 until her passing in 2019. He could make a sick engine sing. In his younger days, he also built and raced his own high-performance automobiles. His 409 rarely lost at the track.
Survivors include his daughter, Teresa Burdick of Bennington and his friend Lenny Chaplin of Bennington, who he loved like a son. He is also survived by his brother Donald Monroe of Shaftsbury, sister Linda Hunt of Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother David Monroe and his son-in-law, Michael Burdick.
At Sonny's request there will be no calling hours or funeral services.
The burial will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
