John H. Debell Jr.

John H. DeBell, Jr., 91, a resident of Vail Road, Bennington, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 30, 2020 following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington on November 7, 1928, he was the son of the late Jack and Mary (Webber) DeBell. John received his education in local schools and was a 1947 graduate of North Bennington High School. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married the former Marion Klindub at the Methodist Church in Bennington on April 17, 1949. This past April they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

A stone mason by trade, John started working with his father Jack DeBell in Old Bennington at the age of ten, from whom he learned the trade. John laid many dry stone walls in Old Bennington and in the Bennington area. He also worked with the Allen Organization on numerous landscape projects. John had a small winter logging operation, a lawn mowing and snow plowing service. He was a bee-keeper and for many years was a maple syrup producer. John retired 2018 after operating his own general contracting business for 70 years.

John enjoyed spending time with his family and having cook-outs. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping, fishing and boating. In later years his hobby was wood-turning. In earlier years he served on the Ski-Patrol at Snow Valley.

Survivors include his wife Marion DeBell; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Linda DeBell; a daughter Mary E. DeBell and her companion Leonard Wandrei all of Bennington and several nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Dorothy Moore, Fracis and Max DeBell.

At John's request there will be no services.

Burial will take place in the family lot at Hinsdillville Cemetery.
