BENNINGTON
Glendon Ayer Jr., 94, a resident of Sawyer Drive, Bennington, died peacefully on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Bennington on January 31, 1927, he was the son of the late Martin Glendon and Thelma Mae Ayer. He received his early education in the Bennington schools and was a 1945 graduate of Bennington High School. During World War II Glen served in the Pacific Theatre with the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Mountrail APA 213.
Glen married the former Marie Joyce Carpenter in Bennington on October 1, 1949 and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary with their family. He was employed as a machinist at the Bijur Lubricating Company for 43 years prior to his retirement.
A very active member of the community for many years, Glen was a member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department, Mt. Anthony Lodge # 13, F&AM, American Legion Post 13, Elks Lodge 567 and Hale Mountain Silhouette Club. Glendon could do anything he set his mind to, including building his own house. He also built an outboard motorboat, the Tina Marie, and built and flew radio controlled model airplanes.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Ayer of Bennington; four children, Linda Martin of Bennington, Ruth (Alan) Krawczyk of Bennington, Beverly (James) Bayliss of Pownal and Glenn (Marjorie) Ayer of Pownal; seven grandchildren, Amanda Saunders, Matthew Krawczyk, Nicholas Saunders, Alaina Krawczyk, Glenn Ayer Jr., Bradley Martin and Ryan Ayer and several great-grandchildren and cousins. Glendon was predeceased by a son-in-law, Jerry Martin and a sister, Beverly Whitman.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 1:00 p.m.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
