Edith N. Farley, 90, a resident of Twitchell Hill Road, Shaftsbury, died on May 24, 2025 at Albany Medical Center.
Born in Bennington, Vermont, on February 2, 1935, she was the daughter of William R. and Nellie E. (Rice) Keen, of Bennington (Harwood Hill). She graduated from Bennington High School and Bennington College where she received a B.A. degree in literature and the German language. She was also a recipient of a Fullbright Award to Freiburg University in Germany. She later received her M.S. degree after doing graduate work at New York University and the University of Bridgeport.
After completing her studies, Mrs. Farley worked in New York City at Time Magazine, and later at Henry Holt, Inc. Following her publishing career, she became interested in teaching English and taught in both Wilton and Norwalk, CT at the secondary level.
In 1960, at the Riverside Church in New York City, she wed Donald E. Farley, also a teacher, of Worcester, MA. They were married for 64 years, until the time of his passing in 2024. She is survived by a son, David, and his wife, Kim, who reside in Niskayuna, NY. She also leaves her brother, George Keen and his wife, Brenda, both of Shaftsbury, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Donald Farley, and her brother, William.
After their retirement from teaching, Edith and Don moved to Shaftsbury and worked in the editorial department of Newsbank Inc. of Chester, VT. They have spent much time travelling and in other recreational pursuits. Edith started a reading program for the developmentally disabled at UCS. She was also an avid swimmer and hiker and enjoyed sculpting and painting with oils, and, with her husband, sang in the Bennington County Choral Society.
At Mrs. Farley's request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the family plot in Park Lawn Cemetery located in Bennington on June 6, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
