Donald Harvey, 86, a lifelong resident of Shaftsbury, VT, passed away on January 13, 2026. Born on February 23, 1939, Don was the son of Chester Harvey and Eleanor Welch.
Don attended North Bennington School, graduating in 1958. Soon after, Don joined the U.S. Airforce, where he proudly served, by his own precise count, for “three years, four months, and eight days”. During his service, Don maintained military aircraft, until an Air Force related accident led to an honorable discharge with disability. Don often said he never regretted serving his country and made clear that losing the lower part of a leg “wasn’t going to stop me” from continuing to do those things in life that he loved.
While in the service Don kept in touch through letters and phone calls with his then girlfriend, Linda (Houran). They were married in 1963 upon his return home and went on to share 62 years of a dedicated and loving marriage.
Don had many passions, including woodworking. Family and friends enjoyed his beautiful creations, each reflecting his care, patience, and skill. There was little Don couldn’t fix, - whether it was mechanical, electrical, or plumbing, - he had the skills to make things work. Don also loved the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. He proudly spoke about teaching his children how to fish.
Don worked at a variety of jobs including at Mt. Equinox, Bijur, as well as with several independent contractors, before beginning a long career at Southwest Vermont Medical Center. Beginning as a pneumatic control technician, he advanced to become the Director of the Engineering Department, serving the hospital for 33 years. A quiet and respectful man, Don lived his life guided by simple but powerful values. At his retirement he shared words that truly reflect his character: “I have no regrets in life. I am fair, firm, and friendly, and I try to live by the golden rule and keep peoples’ feelings in mind when I speak”.
Don will be remembered by his friendly demeanor, his many talents, and his unwavering love and commitment to family.
Don was predeceased by his parents, his brother Fred, and his sister, Jean. Don is survived by his wife, Linda, their children, Michelle (David) Struba of MA, Jodi (Martin) Saumur of Florida, Eric Harvey of Loudonville, NY, as well as his brother Phil, sister Evelyn, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A private family gathering celebrating Don’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations can be made in memory of Donald Harvey to a charity of choice or to the Vermont Veterans’ Home, where Don was treated with tremendous respect and care.
