Cathleen "Cathy" Mary Harwood (Hier) was born in Bennington on March 2, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Edwol and Mary Hier. Cathy received her education in Bennington and was a 1952 graduate of
Bennington High School. She served as the Shaftsbury Town Clerk and Bennington Vermont District and Family Court Clerk.
Cathleen and Ernie were married at the Bennington Methodist Church on July 3, 1954. They recently observed their 66th wedding anniversary.
Cathy was a devoted member of the Shaftsbury Methodist Church. Here she made many lifelong friends and let her beautiful voice ring through the choir. She was a talented artist who enjoyed oil painting and in her adult life became involved in interpretive dance groups. Cathy shared a love of cooking and was an amazing baker
who was well known for her perfect pies.
Cathy was also lovingly and actively involved in Special Olympics.
Survivors include five children, Gail (Jason) Balch of Manchester, Brian E. Harwood of Hoosick Falls, NY, Lori (Tim) Blair of Wells, Dennis H. (Honor Thompson) Harwood of Bennington and Frank E. Harwood of Manchester; 9 grandchildren, Erica Gray, Leah Zoufaly, Nicholas Balch, Brian Eric Harwood, David Ernest Harwood, Jocelyn Elaine Harwood, Nathan James Harwood, Timothy B. Blair and Dennis Harwood along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. They were predeceased by a daughter, Susan Jane Harwood and a grandson, Lorne Blair. Ernie was pre-deceased by two sisters and two brothers, Alice Pratt, Priscilla D'Alessandro, Junior and Silas Harwood and Cathleen was pre-deceased by three sisters, Dorothy Hier, Jane Moffit and Ruth Lasher.
The funeral will be held from the Shaftsbury Methodist Church on Saturday September 19, at 11:00 a.m.
Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
The burial will follow at the family lot at the Shaftsbury Village Cemetery
All Covid 19 procedures will be followed including the wearing of masks and social distancing.
