Maryann C. Rinsma, 71, a longtime resident of Bennington died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born on August 7, 1948 in Pittsfield, MA to the late Cornelius and Margaret J (Dann) Rinsma.

After graduating from UMass Amherst, Maryann went on to become a respiratory therapist and worked at the then named Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington for many years. She then worked for the United Counseling Service, also in Bennington, until her retirement.

A talented artist, she enjoyed making jewelry, pottery and handcrafted tote bags. Maryann was interested enough in Egyptology to learn to read hieroglyphs and had a lifelong love of astronomy and horses. Her favorite TV shows were Dr Who, the Star Trek series and programming on PBS channels.

She is survived by her brother Dann (Nancy) of MA, several cousins and her friends.

At her request, there will be no calling hours or services.

How do you say goodbye to someone that you have known and loved for 53 years? I can say that I loved her for her intellect, her curiosity, her creativity, her compassion, and her strong moral sense. We shared adventures and meals, laughter and tears. She challenged me, supported me and cut me down to size when I needed it. She taught me so much. She was a sister of my heart if not by blood.
Goodbye, my sister.

Maryann Rinsma was simply a very fun person to know. She worked the evening shift in the Respiratory Care Department at SVMC for many years and was known for her expertise and sincere dedication to her patients. She brightened up many long and busy shifts for all of us with her quick wit and sense of humor.... especially in the Pediatric Department.
Rest in Peace dear friend...
