Eli W. “Red” Dawson, 79, a resident of Park Street, Bennington, died Friday, November 1, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Born in Poultney on April 10, 1934, he was the son of the late Raymond and Angeline (Lancour) Dawson. Eli received his education in Chippenhook. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.
Eli married the former Elizabeth Brace at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on December 7, 1963. Mrs. Dawson died August 24, 2001.
In earlier years Eli was employed at the Polygraphic Company in North Bennington and later in the maintenance department at Bennington College for many years. He also was a driver at Red Top taxi in Bennington for many years.
Eli was a member of both American Legion Post 13 in Bennington and the Bennington Moose Lodge. He enjoyed music, his extensive record collection, bowling, fishing and especially time with his family.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary L. Brien of Bennington, Melissa Smilie of Argyle, NY and Michele Dawson of Bennington; a son, Carnell McCord of Rutland; eight grandchildren, Tiva Dion, Emily Noyes, J.D, and Logan Brien, Samantha Quigan, S. Dion and Zachery Smilie and Jennifer Johnson; four great-grandchildren,; a brother, Robert Dawson, a sister, Patricia Smith and a very close friend, Patricia’s husband, Michael Smith, all of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eli was predeceased by a son, Eli Dawson II and by four siblings, Emily Dow, Mary Graham, Raymond and Josephine Dawson.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 1:00 P.M.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
Private committal services will take place at the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
