June Frances Murrell Carroll, a former resident of Barber Street, Bennington, passed away peacefully on January 13th, 2013, just days short of what would have been her 82nd birthday, following a long and brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born January 18, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Marguerite (Downs) and William Murrell. Educated in the North Bennington school system, she put herself through Nursing School, graduating from St. Luke’s Nursing in Pittsfield, MA. where she was valedictorian. June put her care and knowledge to good use for over 35 years, working as a registered nurse at the former Putnam Memorial Hospital well into it’s transition as Southwest Vermont Medical Center, where she went on to become the hospital supervisor for a number of years.
She also worked at the now shuttered Sourdiffe Nursing Home, as well as Fairview Nursing Home, while raising her children when they were young.
Married to the late Joseph F. Carroll, Sr. on April 11, 1959, in a true partnership, June and Joe would go on to raise their own children, as well as a multitude of foster children beginning in 1975. Like her husband, June enjoyed politics, was very active in her church, St. Francis De Sales Sacred Heart, and had a passion for bingo and coffee, but her greatest love was first and foremost her family.
June is survived by sons James Thomas of Bennington, John Lynch of Gales Ferry, CT, Joseph Francis, Jr. of Hoosick Falls, NY, Edward Joseph of New York City, Robert Brace of Salt Lake City, Utah, daughters, Deborah Dufur of Port Charlotte, FL, and Evelyn Wild of Bennington, as well as10 grandchildren, and her beloved sister Joan Ledgard of MA, and several nieces and nephews. June was predeceased by a sister, Jane Holznagel.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 1:00 A.M. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
